Novice Initiation Ceremony, Chiang Mai
Buddhism is beautifully integrated into Thai life. It is very common for buddhist men to join a monastery for anywhere from a few weeks to a year as part of their "normal" social development. They do so both to learn a buddhist way of living that they can take with them into the "real" world, and to earn merit for themselves and their parents in the next life.

This was a very festive novice initiation ceremony that we happened upon at a Wat (temple) near our hotel. All the boys' families were there and there were picnics and posings for pictures in front of the main Buddha image.
